As onion prices have shot
through the roof, the govt claims to be doing all that it can to keep the
commodity within reach of the common man. In the latest move, the centre has
ordered import of over 17,000 tonnes of onion from Egypt and Turkey. Also, the
govt has eased norms so that private importers too can import the key kitchen
commodity. However, despite the move, prices are unlikely to come down to
reasonable levels till the new crop arrives in the market. This will likely
happen in the second week of January, meaning till then prices will rule above
the 50-60 rupee mark.
